There can be no doubt that a good floor completely transforms a home. Kate discusses flooring options from tile to hardwood flooring and how to pick the right flooring for your home.

What Flooring Where?

Having good flooring does wonders for a home. It is important to remember that older floorboards can be drafty and noisy. Herringbone floorboards are a very stylish and classic wooden flooring option. Buying vintage parquet from eBay or other places like that is possible, although cleaning it will cost you money.

Engineered wooden flooring is ideal for underfloor heating. Squishy rugs should be avoided with underfloor heating as they don't transfer heat well. Rugs that are thinner and more decorative work best with underfloor heating.

Kitchen Flooring

A very industrial space often feels warmer with reclaimed wooden flooring. In the kitchen, tiles add a sense of personalization and pattern to the room.

Bathroom Flooring

Underfloor heating works great with tiles in the bathroom. If you have a big tile in the bathroom, you will have fewer grout lines, and the space will appear larger and easier to clean.

Painting Floorboard

As Kate lives in an urban setting, she painted all her floorboards white. Nowadays most paint is water-based and contains low levels of volatile organic compounds. As painted floorboards would need to be repainted from time to time, if you like pristine floorboards, painting floorboards might not be for you.

Lino & Vinyl

Lino and vinyl can both be printed with patterns. Lino is made from renewable sources like linseed oil and cork, so it's more sustainable than lino.

Cork

Cork is a fantastic sustainable flooring option. It is renewable and really great for acoustics. It will block on sounds very well.

Stairs

You can buy off-cuts of vintage rugs and creating stairs that way, a way to create something individual, practical and more affordable.

Leather Flooring

Alternatively, you can invest in leather flooring which is very hard wearing and looks better as it ages.

Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating frees up wall space giving you more space to put furniture. It's great in kitchens, sitting rooms and bedrooms.

Carpet

Underlays and carpets are often made from synthetic materials. You can use stripes to make any space stand out. It is recommended to stick with wool to nylon ratio of 80/20.
