Inspiration really is everywhere. From your wardrobe to your favourite restaurant’s loo. Kate empowers you to go out and get inspired and get decisive with your colour and pattern decisions.
You can find inspiration anywhere. Remember that, dressing your house is like dressing yourself.
A great place to start if you are stuck is your wardrobe. If you are comfortable wearing it, more than likely you will be comfortable living it, from there you can find other colours
Having loads of black in your wardrobe may mean that you are drawn to neutral palettes. In that case look at shades of whites, greys and pops of green. You should look at your accessories to like socks and jewellery. Also, stop and think about your makeup, what colours are you drawn to? This can all help in guiding your colour palette.
Shops are an amazing place to start, particularly shop windows, they are put together by trained professionals and have excellent colour and texture combinations that you can take inspiration from.
You then need to look deeper into the type of pattern you like, pull things off the rails and look at the patterns you are drawn to.
Do you wear tailored, paired down clothing with clean lines?
Yes - You may like a minimal paired down interior. Try using mid-century furniture in your home. It has a great minimalist feel.
Do you love boho clothes and have a relaxed style?
Yes - Buy cushions and throws with pompom edges. You will likely love texture and dimension in your home.
Grab clothes off the rails and really look and feel them. Very soon you will notice that there are some commonalities in shape, texture, colour or pattern.
Always be aware of what is around you. Nature is a lovely starting point. Local cafes and hotels are great for colours and styles. You should always keep your eyes open, look around you for unexpected colour coordination. Inspiration is around you all the time.
Restaurant loos particularly are great for colour and pattern combinations.
By using this decorating rule you can easily create a balanced colour scheme.
In the example below 60% of the room is navy, 30% is beige and 10% chocolate brown.
You should use it as a guideline rather than a precise math formula, to help you create a cohesive and well-balanced room using three colours, which can vary in tone and shade, but are not too matching.
