Finding Inspiration: The Boutique Hotel

A hotel is a great place to get ideas and inspiration. Hotels serve as a multifunctional space and are really useful when planning your home. Kate is at the Artist Residence Hotel in London, Pimlico. You can see more images of the various Artist Residence hotels here.

A boutique hotel is like home, but better. The furniture isn't fitted and it feels like home. The bed is a luxurious four-poster bed with a twist. If you're on a budget, you'll want to consider the gorgeous parquet flooring since you can save so much money by buying vintage.

Getting the bedside table right is a real challenge. There's nothing quite like vintage bedside furniture. You'll get something unique that is also an amazing bargain. In a period property, you can find furniture that fits that era. However, a mid-century modern bedside table works well.

The Artist Residence - A Case Study

The Red Thread

The linking colour is green. This is seen in the patina of the bedside table and the green sofa, chair and rug.

Kate's Mantra

Something new - The bed is something new.

Something old - Several pieces of furniture are vintage, including the bedside table, the chests, the wardrobe, and the chairs.

Something black - Adding elements of black anchor the space, the bed, bedside table and frames all add light touches of black.

Something gold - Generally, something metallic that bounces the light around, such as brass legs on the coffee table and a pendant light

Zoning a Space with a Rug

The rug helps to zone the sitting space, joining the space together and making it feel like it is part of the same room. Minimum front legs should be on the rugs. The glass coffee table is great as it doesn't dominate the room and allows the light to pass through.

Telling Your Own Story

You need to consider all the elements. The chair seat has been upholstered in a contrast chair stripe, looking a little bit more individual and personal. There is a palette of considered colours.

When picking cushions you want a stripe, a floral and a plain. That can be repeated with any colour palette and really work.

Matching Patterns & Colours

It is crucial to gather samples of the materials and colours you are using. The right textures make a room come to life. To make your design scheme rich and layered, you need lots of different textures mixed in with wood if you prefer a monochromatic scheme.

The Bathroom

You should view your bathroom more like a room where you bathe. It is a great idea to install a sliding door in your bathroom to save space, but you should really consider its placement. A metre-wide space can be transformed into an en-suite bathroom. If your bathroom is small, create walls made from frosted glass or use clear or frosted glass along the top of a wall.

Hotel Getaway

If you can get away and spend a night in a hotel it is a really great idea. You can learn so much from hotel rooms.
