The home is not designed to be a bland, soulless box. Kate empowers you how to add character to your home, soften it, and add depth.

From the Lesson Workbook

Adding Character

Panelling is a great way to add character to a room, there are different types of panelling so carefully consider what type will best suit your room. Victorian or Georgian panelling will complement decorative details and mouldings in period properties.

A Georgian house, with its high ceilings, typically suits full-height panels with simple rectangular shapes, whereas a Victorian house tends to favour dado rails.

New Buildings

You often don't have high ceilings in new builds so wall lighting is your friend. There are great wall lights that you can use to create shadows and work well with what you already have.

Work with What You Have Got

You can paint your walls in two different colours. Feathering two spaces with different materials is a great way of adding character to a modern space.

Vintage Furniture

Modern mid-century furniture suits every period. A more contemporary space can benefit from its depth as well as its clean lines.

Don't Forget the Fifth Wall

Have fun with your ceiling, you can turn it into a feature wall. Kate's kitchen ceiling is tiled, reflecting light back into the room. When working with dark walls, keeping the ceiling light can overpower the room. Darkening the ceiling with a dark colour helps to make it disappear, and it adds depth to your space. Take that colour and bring it down your wall.
