Designing a home is more than just the aesthetic. Understanding and defining the function of your space allows a home to make sense and flow effortlessly. In this lesson, 2LG teach you how to establish the function of your spaces.

Lesson Summary

• The function is the doing thing, what are you going to do in that room?
• Streamline your function as much as possible.
• Try and go for one function out of each space.
• Prioritising each space will make your home experience better.
• Ask yourself how often you have guests, is your daily life going to struggle if you don't have guest rooms for your guests?
• Your primary functions should be the priority within a home, a guest room could be a secondary function.
• Consider the natural light you have in your home.
• Do the functions flow correctly?
• Think about how the spaces are connected.
• Make sure the functions fit together.

The Bedroom

• A bedroom serves a variety of purposes from a laundry room to a wardrobe and sleeping area.
• Prioritise the relaxation function of the bedroom and remove some of the other functions from the room.

The Kitchen Table

• Their dining area acts as a studio due to good natural light and performs a number of functions.
• The kitchen is for entertaining friends and has to be transitional.
• Transitional space needs loads of storage.
• Jordan and Russell like hidden storage in transitional areas as it allows things to be folded away.

Your Assignment

Walkthrough your home asking yourself the following questions:

• Are the spaces functioning as well as they can?
• Does your home flow together sensibly or do changes need to be made?
• What kind of function is best placed in the spaces you've already had to work with?
• Do this at two different times of the day so that you can experience how the light changes in these spaces.
• What's the journey through these spaces?
• How do you connect these spaces?
