Your Interior Roadmap

Designing a home is a journey. Jordan and Russell take you through their interior roadmap to help you start on the journey of designing your home.

Three Colours, Three Feelings, Three Functions, Three Materials

• Think of all the colours you love and want to experience.
• Think of the three feelings you'd like to experience at home. They might be related to each other, or very different.
• Think about what you're trying to do at home.
• What are the most important things for you to work, sleep and relax?
• What kind of materials do you love best, how do you feel about them?

The Title of the Project

• Create a title that will give you an instant tagline.
• Keep it open with room for manoeuvre.
• Consider what makes you feel happy and excited.

Title Inspiration

• You can borrow this from a variety of genres, including your favourite song or your favourite bands.
• There's room for manoeuvre, and layers can be added later.

Coming Together

• Sit down with the people you share your home with and come together.
• Don't worry about having different things, negotiate and get the list down to the core three.
• Talk through any conflicts.
• The roadmap will allow you to stay on track.

Communicating

• The narrative and the story are most important at this stage.
• Getting these things down to three forces you to explore and focus on what you love.
• Restricting the number of things you are allowed to use gives you freedom later.

Outcome

• Negotiating your final list will give you a solid road map to work with.
• In the case of Perry Rise, there was a conflict over the bathroom, they decided that neither had to compromise, it became a wet room and bath.

Your Assignment

Grab some pens, pencils and spend time writing things down, sit down with whoever you're designing your home with. Work separately initially, and then compare your results. Each person should write three colours, materials, feelings and functions they want to convey in your home.
