Project Walkthrough: St Albans

Jordan & Russell show you round a gorgeous project they designed in St Albans, teaching you to work bold colours and patterns into a design scheme.

Lesson Summary

  • 'Rock and Roll, eclectic cottage'
  • This is a very maximalist project with pattern and colour, a very eclectic design.

The Client's Taste

  • The clients are very eclectic and love to travel
  • The yellow, pink and blue were apart of their roadmap and are key.
  • They used vintage pillars as a framing device to highlight the new extension.
  • It's important to think about what you're keeping and what you're getting rid of when you add vintage pieces.
  • A piece of architectural salvage has been used in the bathroom, and the top surface has been refinished.

Kitchen

  • A simple, pale pink brickwork tile is used on the walls up to the ceiling.
  • The worktops are made of oak and the island is a concrete top.
  • The property is Edwardian, the materiality adds an element of luxury, reminiscent of the building's history.
  • They mixed brass with nickel so the space doesn't feel too serious.
  • A bold floral was used in the property, linking the spaces together.
  • The wallpaper and carpet in the hallway are archival liberty prints.
  • They've added a cast iron fireplace to the dining room.

Larger Vintage Pieces

  • The cabinet in the dining room and dining table are both vintage pieces.
  • They've embellished the cabinet with gold leaf.
  • Pocket doors have been used throughout the home, opening up space.
  • Salvaged doors were used in the master bedroom
  • The walls in the master bedroom are made of polished plaster.
  • Integrating large architectural pieces should happen at the beginning of the project.
  • An encaustic tile, a washed oak and carpet have been used in terms of flooring to make everything soft, warm and cosy.

Sourcing

  • The bespoke encaustic tile are from Alhambra tiles.
  • The barstools are 'Form Barstools' of Norman Copenhagen.
  • The wall lamps in the bathroom are Original BTC.
  • The green tiles in the bathroom are Johnson tiles.
  • The sinks in the bathroom are CP Hart.
  • The kitchen wooden counters were crafted by Sebastien Cox Limited.
