From the Lesson Workbook

Floorstory: Rugs

2LG lays out the things you need to consider when choosing a rug, how best to play with scale, and how best to choose a rug that is perfect for your space.

Lesson Summary

Go Big or Go Home

  • Rugs are crucial when creating an interior scheme.
  • A rug zones a space whilst also creating tremendous impact.
  • Often people choose a rug that is too small.
  • A rug should be big enough for furniture to sit on top of it.
  • In a sitting room, go as big you can with either the entire sofa sitting on the rug or the two front feet.
  • Take masking tape or builders tape and mark out the shape of the rug on your floor before committing to buying.
  • Alternatively, mark the corners of your proposed rug with houseplants for a greater understanding of scale.

Creating Zones

  • Rectangular rugs are the most common; they are versatile and great for zoning.
  • Rugs are brilliant for demarcating and zoning areas.
  • A living room could be zoned with a rug that all the furniture sits on.

Beyond the Rectangle

  • A motif around the edge of a rectangle is playful, giving an element of fun in an open-plan space.
  • A pill or lozenge is playful, working great in an entryway or sitting room.
  • In a larger space, you can experience several rugs.

Introducing Texture

  • Rugs are a great way to introduce texture into an interior.
  • A hand-knotted rug feels luxurious with the soft pile underfoot feeling the closest to carpet.
  • A flatweave is a lovely durable option, slightly less expensive than hand-knotted but still beautiful.
  • A flatweave is very contemporary, working great in kids rooms and high traffic areas like hallways.

Vintage Rugs

  • A vintage rug is a great durable option that is easy to clean.
  • A perfect option for a family home and high traffic areas.
  • It is a great way to add something old to a modern interior.
  • A vintage rug adds a layer of authenticity.

Introducing Pattern

  • You can go geometric and very bold or for a more natural impact.
  • For renters, a rug is a great way to introduce colour and pattern into your home.
  • It is also a fantastic investment piece.

Rugs in Dining Rooms

  • In an adult dining space, a rug can be a great addition.
  • Perhaps consider something patterned as it hides stains and spills.
  • Make sure the rug is big enough so that when the chair is pulled out it is still on the rug.

Rugs in Bedroom

  • A rug in a bedroom is a great way to make it feel cosy and soft. The bigger the better, ideally have a rug bigger enough that the entire bed and bedsides table sits on.

Building a Scheme Around a Rug

  • You can pull colours out of a mug using this as the basis of your colour scheme.

Roses Rug by 2LG

  • A hand-knotted rug, a great investment piece. You can buy it here.

Moire Rug by 2LG

  • A mixture of matte and viscose silk texture.
  • A hand-tufted rug, based on moire fabric, a graphic modern take.
  • It is made of coloured threads with an overall black and grey quality. You can buy the Moire rug here.

Your Assignment

Get researching. Look at the construction of rugs and the main types of rugs you can buy. Think outside the box, look at organic shapes. Shortlist four rugs that you like. Use tape to demarcate the proposed rugs on your floor, for a better understanding of the scale.

Case Study- Studio

Their Portal rug in pink helps to demarcate their chaise lounge, helping to create zones within their space.
