Colour Scheming

Not only does colour add personality and interest to a room, but it can also help to zone open-plan living spaces. Learn how I used colour in this project to give purpose and identity to each zone on the ground floor.

Zoning with Colour

While there are individual spaces within the broken-plan ground floor of this home, there is also a clear connection between them. This has been created through building a cohesive palette of colours and materials.

The Snug

  • A colour-drenched room, where every surface and texture is a tone of the same colour - apart from one accent chair, to add a little bit of contrast.
  • A dark heavy velvet curtain pairs with a complementary cotton voile.
  • The sofas are covered with a luxurious brown wool and brushed cotton, sitting alongside a smart leather ottoman.
  • A mixture of different textures and materials stops the monochrome scheme feeling flat.
  • Reupholster and reuse items where possible - it's more cost effective and kinder to the environment.

The Open-Plan Space

  • To contrast the cosy snug, I wanted the open-plan space to have a light and airy feel.
  • Bauwerk limewash in a warm neutral tone on the walls, shelving and cabinetry adds subtle texture and interest.
  • To unify the open-plan spaces and broken-plan snug, I opted for the same flooring to run throughout.
  • A textured wall covering in the dining area makes the space feel contained and distinct.
  • Soft green kitchen cabinets and a ceramic worktop fit the aesthetic of the space.

The Overall Scheme

The brief was to create a warm, calm scheme that felt connected to nature. This meant that we avoided stark tones, instead opting for softer neutrals that felt inviting. The moody colours within the snug suit cosy evenings, while the lighter scheme for the back of the house connects to the garden view and feels more lively for entertaining.

Use Physical Samples Where Possible

It's important to see, touch and feel the fabrics and materials you are going to use in your scheme. Physical samples also make trying out different combinations much easier, as well as seeing the subtle differences between similar colours and textures.
