A Tour of Alex's WOW!house Media Room - Part 1

Welcome to the space I designed for WOW!house 2025, a contemporary and luxurious take on a media room perfect for date night.

Date Night Media Room

I was thrilled to be invited to design a space for WOW!house 2025. I was asked to design the first-ever media room, and it has taken a little under a year from concept to completion. As designers we have full creative control, and it's a brilliant opportunity to showcase our unique style.

My Brief

Using myself as the client, I created my dream brief 'Date Night'. My children have flown the nest, and I wanted to reclaim my home as a couples' retreat and fill it with all the fabrics and finishes that didn't quite work for family life.

I wanted to feel calm and serene when in the space, and this has informed all of the design choices and interior architecture.

The Details

  • Every room should have a focal point, and for this scheme it was a spherical golden piece of art that we have backlit to emphasise its beauty. Its convex structure is sympathetic to the curved architecture of the room.
  • The curved walls give a cocooning and comforting feel, and the curves are continued up onto the ceiling.
  • Adding a step up to the sofa area really helps to differentiate the spaces within the room.
  • A rug on the raised platform ensures the seating zone feels cosy and juxtaposes the beautiful solid timber floor throughout the rest of the space.
  • The curved lines of the room are contrasted with choice pieces featuring straight lines, such as the custom floor lamp by Porta Romana.
  • I wanted to feature all of my favourite materials; lacquered wall finishes, luxurious velvet, and artisan ceramics - the ceramic room divide is by Camila Webb Carter.
  • As the space is a media room, I chose a large 77-inch television. It is mounted into a wall covered in cream-suede fabric which conceals all the speakers and wiring.
  • When designing a room, don't forget about the ceiling. It should always be treated as the '5th wall' and designed with as much consideration as the walls. I have incorporated ceiling beams which run seamlessly along the ceiling and curving down to form display cabinetry.
