With the bones of your design complete, Alex talks through how to go about selecting fabrics, materials and colours for each room.

From the Lesson Workbook

Fabrics & Materials

Following on from the white modelling, it's time to think about the specific materials and colours you want to include in each room.

Materials and Colours

We now know exactly what pieces of furniture and joinery are going to be within each space, so it's time to think about the materials and colours for each of these elements.

I like to present the best case option for the client first. I'll have a few other back-up options ready, but the design I put forward features my number one choices.

Approaching Pattern and Texture

In my approach to design, I will opt for plain fabrics across the larger items of furniture and then bring patterns in through rugs, accent chairs, pouffes and cushions.

Texture is also a great way to add interest to plainer fabrics.

Window Treatments

There are many ways to dress a window; a simple voile offers privacy while still providing light and airiness, whereas a heavy velvet curtain will be better for blocking light and retaining heat.

There are a huge number of options out there, from Roman blinds and roller blinds to cafe curtains and sheer curtains - it's about working out the best solution for the room's specific use.

Rugs

A rug supplier will often be able to customise any of their existing designs to something that is completely unique and individual to the needs of your project. You can adapt a design to suit your colour scheme, or create a custom size to fit your room.

Materials for the 'fantasy' room we put together in this lesson are as follows:

  • Pierre Frey - Teddy Mohair Choco, F2500027
  • Mark Alexander - Madison Sienna, M687 / 24
  • Misia - Aime Terre D'Ombre, M356 631
  • Alex Lawson Home - Nitto Sand
  • Misia - L'Orient Sepia, M245 1 01
  • Le Manach - Bamako Cacao, C509
  • Casamanca - Alma, 4388 14 63
