From the Lesson Workbook

Designing a Fully Bespoke Room

As I was the client on this project, I was able to design exactly what I wanted without any constraints. This meant going fully bespoke with custom pieces to achieve my dream space.

Using Custom Elements

Incorporating custom pieces into a design is a wonderful way of maximising creativity and value in any project, and for my WOW!house design, I opted to have everything custom for this reason.

Pre-visualising the Designs

In order to communicate my bespoke ideas with the suppliers I wanted to work with, it was important to have the designs pre-visualised and mocked up in order for them to understand what I wanted to create.

Establishing Floor Plan

The space at WOW!house is 6.5m x 4m. I knew pretty quickly I wanted to utilise two of those walls to house a wraparound sofa and then install a TV opposite. I also moved the doors to create a long, uninterrupted run of wall space.

Custom Elements

  • The joinery wall is a crucial element of the design. It features a hidden bar, as well as shelving that blends into ceiling beam detailing.
  • As you enter the room, you see what looks like a box made of solid travertine but is actually just painted to look like travertine.
  • On top of this, there is a piece of bespoke ceramic art.
  • Raising the bespoke wraparound sofa up on a 20cm high platform gives additional interest.
  • I opted to have a curved wall and applied a lacquer finish. To juxtapose this, the ceiling and wall opposite is in a matt suede fabric.
  • I designed a completely custom rug based upon the concept of 'Life's Journey'.
  • The lamp I designed was inspired by a piece of art that I saw.
