Alex discusses how she decided to go against the grain in order to create a luxurious dressing room and en-suite that truly answered her client's brief.

From the Lesson Workbook

Project 1 - A London Townhouse

A Dedicated Dressing Room

The majority of people are of the opinion that maximising the number of bedrooms is crucial to ensure future saleability and value – however, that wasn't the best way forward for this project.

Sacrificing a bedroom to create the walk-in wardrobe was the best decision to fulfil the design brief and create a home that enabled the lifestyle my client wanted to live.

  • Bespoke joinery has been designed to meet the exact storage requirements of the client. When designing any storage, it's incredibly important to pay close attention to the inventory. What exactly is it that you need and store, and how do you need to store it? This will feed into decisions such as the number of drawers you need and the dimensions of hanging space.
  • This was a relatively small space that needed to work quite hard. Custom joinery is a great way to maximise the usability of a small space such as this while offering unparalleled function and practicality.
  • Our client has a beautiful bag collection, so we chose to display these on open shelving.
  • To complete the principal suite, we designed a luxury ensuite shower room. In terms of aesthetics, it is a continuation of the bedroom in terms of colour palette and curved architecture.
  • Polished plaster walls give a beautiful sense of movement and depth to the walls while also staying true to the neutral scheme. It is also a very easy to use and easy to maintain material in a bathroom.
  • Mosaic marble tiles on the floor add a sense of drama and visual interest, while the burl wood cabinet echoes the theme of nature.
  • The cabinet and the sink are off the peg, however we chose to customise them to give that 'bespoke' feel. We bought a very ordinary white sink from a high street retailer, but then covered in the same polished plaster as the walls.
