Veere muses on the role of emotion and the subconscious in his work as an interior designer, and how important it is to tap into when designing for clients.
One aspect of interior design that is becoming more obvious and apparent to me as my career progresses is the role the subconscious has to play in decision-making and choices.
The subconscious never fails us and is always the part that contains the truth. I find that the right decisions are always the ones made intuitively.
The best interior designers that I see are the ones who are subconsciously understanding their clients and the way they should live.
If you want to become an interior designer, please don't worry about getting the best qualifications; instead, focus on relationship building with people already in the world and apprenticing with designers you admire. Consider all aspects of the industry, and be open to opportunities you may not have originally considered.
Over the years, I have found I am able to learn more about my clients' emotional subconscious through their design tastes. This is a skill I have honed over time, and helps me to intuitively understand what my client may want before they can vocalise it.
Clients can have quite strong emotional responses at various points in the design process, and it is the role of the interior designer to navigate this professionally and calmly.
Memory is an incredibly powerful element within interior design; memories of a home we loved can lodge into our subconscious and influence our future taste and design style.
