From the Lesson Workbook

The Colonnade

The main house and guest house are connected by a walkway that I have turned into a colonnade by lining it with columns, reminiscent of classical architecture.

  • The guest house has its own front door into a lovely elliptical entrance hallway, and beyond this, it is connected by the colonnade into the treillage room of the main house.
  • On the north side, the colonnade can be closed off with louvre shutters.
  • I decided the walls of the colonnade needed to be a different colour to the rest of the house's exterior, so I chose a brown toned ochre.
  • As the colonnade is covered, I could lay carpets down and have beautiful seating arrangements with upholstered cushions. The built-in bench is adorned with beautiful zellige tiles.
  • I have lots of beautiful potted plants lining the walkway, including an enormous begonia.
  • On the ceilings, I have Moroccan lanterns which are wired in, but the bulb is cleverly concealed within the design.
  • Hats are hung here and shoes stored nearby so they are easily accessible when walking through here to the garden. I also have a basket for secateurs, so they are close to hand if I want to do some quick pruning or deadheading.
  • Olive bowls decorate the main wall behind the seating area.
  • All of the outdoor spaces have been tiled in Bejmat tiles, a small handmade Moroccan tile that can be laid in all sorts of creative ways.
