Architecture inspired by John Soane

I have had many influences in my design career, but the work of architect John Soane is of particular importance to me. In my mind, he is one of the great geniuses of architecture, and Gazebo reflects his architectural sensibility in subtle ways.

Sir John Soane was born in 1753 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most important English architects of all time. His work defined the Regency era, and can be characterised by his use of columns, vaulted ceilings, skylights and domes.

Soane took inspiration from classical and ancient architecture, while also playing with light and space in new and innovative ways.

Examples of his work include The Bank of England, Dulwich Picture Gallery, One Marylebone and his own home in Lincoln's Inn Fields, which is now the Sir John Soane Museum.

Soane details in my homes

  • Vaulted ceiling with golf ball cornice and scored line detailing
  • Staff beading with a half-rounded corner
  • Archways
  • Symmetrical columns
  • 3 panelled doors with beaded detail
  • The veranda
