The Stair Hall
The staircase is housed within one of the shoulders of the temple, and is part of the journey you take to get up to the main room of the house.
- The doorway is slightly lower than normal, meaning you stoop to get into the room and are greeted by the surprise and magnificence of the high ceilings.
- Whenever I can, I love to include a window in a hallway so I can install generous curtains around it.
- Hanging on the wall, I have a collection of sixteen framed New Zealand pressed ferns, dated 1907, gifted to me by an old friend, which are incredibly beautiful and special to me.
- Simple rush matting on the floor grounds the space, and the stairboards are painted white underneath, just poking through.
- As far as I'm concerned, the in-between spaces are just as important as the spaces you enter. Take care to consider their decoration carefully and don't overlook them.
- A hallway can be a great place to house your drinks tray, something I always encourage my clients to have. If you have the space, I recommend including a hallway chair or bench, too.

For more than three decades, Veere Grenney has shaped the landscape of international interior design with an eye for timeless elegance and a deep respect for tradition.
