Veere emphasises the vital importance of a good relationship between designer and client, and suggests ways of fostering this from the outset.
I've always found that the relationship between designer and client is vitally important to the whole process of interior design. You need to foster an intuitive understanding of people in order to undertake successful design.
There are many types of clients, but not many of these are sure of what they want, which is often why they have enlisted the help of an interior designer. Your job is to take them through the process, listening carefully and getting to know them, so that you can show them things until they suddenly recognise what they do want.
It can be an intimate relationship, with lots of conversations in order to better understand your client and their needs. They may not think to tell you everything, so you have to be highly intuitive to what they may mean behind what they are saying.
Understanding people and being able to foster good relationships is one of the most important qualities you can have as an interior designer. Not only will you be working closely with your client, but a whole orchestra of other people working with you to achieve the vision.
Every project should begin with lengthy discussions to ensure you are on the same page as your client and have a shared vision of how everything will work.
Communicating honestly with people is imperative to achieving a collaborative process that will enable you to design the best possible outcome.
You must always remember that the way a person's house looks is a hugely emotional thing and should always be dealt with sensitively.
