Loved for the height and contrast they provide, gladioli look great scattered amongst a dahlia bed. Here you’ll learn how to plant them using a bulb planter.
I am going to plant some Gladiolus 'Plum Tart' throughout the dahlia bed. This is a grandiflora variety that will add height and interest to the bed and will provide good vertical contrast when placed next to the domes of the dahlias.
When we first started doing this, we mulched the dahlia bed and found that as a result we protected the gladioli (a tender perennial) from the frost too, so they have come back every year.
As we do with all our bulbs, we plant our gladioli using a bulb planter, which causes minimal disruption to the microlife below.
Don't cover your holes until you have finished planting, so you can remember where you have put your bulbs. Otherwise you'll end up replanting in the same place.
Remember to plant your bulbs with the pointed end sticking upwards and space them with around 10 - 15 cm between them.
