A home isn't designed in isolation. You should have a cohesive design throughout your home. Kate empowers you to find your own red thread in this lesson.

From the Lesson Workbook

Finding Your Red Thread

You aren't designing a home in isolation. The rooms in your home should be cohesive. Your red thread is a common theme that runs through every room of your home. There will be a colour or something you are drawn to again and again.

The Red-Thread in Kate's Home

  • Deep burgundy staircase
  • Pale pink sofa
  • Deeper pink stairs in the library
  • Office-deeper red.
  • Bedroom-pale pink walls.

Your red thread should be reflected in materials and textures as well. It can also be reflected in the styles of furniture you own.

Shapes

Shapes are important when putting rooms together. Try and break up long lines and corridors with softer, curved shapes.

Disruptor Colours

Use this as a hidden accent and use a little bit of it in each room. A disruptor colour stops rooms from feeling too matchy-matchy.

The Views Within a Room

Creating views within a room involves positioning things so you catch just a glimpse.

Tips for Creating a Red Thread

  • Think about repeating shapes. You could repeat this in the shape of furniture, accessories and within your artwork as in this image
  • Consider running a single accent colour throughout your entire house. You can effortlessly tie your rooms together with vases, table legs, or picture frames.
  • You may have a common wood-tone throughout your home.
