From the Lesson Workbook

Sweet Peas: Tying and Collecting Seeds

Essential tasks involved in growing sweet peas

Winter - sow seeds in a greenhouse from mid-October through the winter months.

Spring - plant out seedlings in full sun between March and May; make a teepee for support; keep tying the young shoots to the frame as they grow; keep watering and feeding the plants with microbial compost to help the development of strong shoots.

Summer - keep the ground moist (but not waterlogged); pick and deadhead the flowers regularly. At their peak flowering time in June-July, sweet peas need to be picked almost daily to prolong the flowering season.

Autumn - keep tying the last of the season's sweet peas and cut off the newly forming seed pods; this will encourage the plant to produce new flowers. When the plants die, cut them down but leave the roots in the ground; they will add useful nutrients to the soil.

Note: Removing seed pods and picking flowers - even the small ones - daily is the best way of extending the flowering season of your sweet peas.

The Land Gardeners

Award-winning garden designers and cut flower growers on a mission to save our soil.

Garden designers, flower growers and compost creators, Henrietta Courtauld and Bridget Elworthy joined forces to found The Land Gardeners in 2012. United by their passion for organically grown plants and a shared interest in soil health, they began by growing and selling cut flowers to esteemed florists, and worked on restoring historic gardens to their former glory. Most recently, they launched Climate Compost - a project born from years of inquisitive research into soil biology with the aim of creating a microbially rich compost that produces nutrient dense crops, while also supporting and boosting the local ecosystem. With an unwavering commitment to improving the health of our land and its biodiversity, The Land Gardeners’ approach is one of sensitivity, unparalleled expertise and, above all, a loving respect for the natural world and its preservation.
