A Hanging Flower Cloud - Part 4: Creating Your Own Vines

Alongside authentic vines, I also like to create my own trailing vines out of clusters of flowers. This can be especially useful if you want to create more texture and variation in your display.

For this piece, I will be making vines out of Achillea 'The Pearl', but this technique also works well with honesty seed heads, which also look great on a Christmas tree.

How to Make Your Own Flower Vines

  • Break off individual clusters of flowers, this will work particularly well with Achillea 'The Pearl'.
  • Overlap two clusters so that the second cluster sits at the bottom of the first stem, and then wrap a very thin gauge wire around the two stems. Continue doing this with more clusters to create your vine.
  • You can then secure your vines to your installation to create texture and movement
  • Clematis can be used to soften any areas that look artificial.
  • Make sure that your stems are clean so that you can remove them easily if you don't like their placement.
  • If your design is going to be the centrepiece of a dinner party, it may be useful to lay the table so that you can see how everything works together.
