A Bulb Lasagne - Part 5: Hyacinths, Dutch Irises and Crocuses

Discover how to make a beautiful bulb lasagne by layering hyacinths, Dutch irises and crocuses.

There should be a minimum of 2 inches of compost on top of the tulip layer. Hyacinth bulbs are the first bulbs that really begin flowering in the spring. As a hyacinth bulb is a very substantial bulb, you don't need as many. Hyacinth bulbs benefit from being planted before winter arrives when they are tipped out and spaced.

Muscari

Muscari creates a wonderful pool of blue and purple.

Some Experimental Dutch Irises

The Dutch irises will allow the pot to go on into June, making it look full of flowers. Like the muscari, they are very cheap.

Crocuses

The last layer is the crocuses. Leave a good 2 inches of soil. Arthur uses three different varieties: 'Flower Accord', 'Spring Beauty' and 'Orange Monarch', which are planted around the edge.

Fill the soil to the brim, leaving two inches, and plant the cardoons in the middle.
