From the Lesson Workbook

Tulip & Wallflower Wall

Arthur shows you around his tulip and wallflower wall, teaching you how you can layer colours and heights to create a canopy effect of flowers.

The wall is only 10 inches deep, and underneath the small layer of soil is broken stone and rock, providing brilliant drainage for tulips. The tulips have been planted in the classic bulb lasagne. Previously, we had the hyacinth 'Woodstock'. On top of all the bulbs, when they were planted in December, he planted 'Sunset Orange' wallflowers and 'Tiger-Eye Yellow' violas.

The mixture illustrates the canopy effect of having different heights of flowers.

Layering Colours

When planting flowers, it's important to think about the different heights and the layering effect. The wall is an example of how to lay colours like a sandwich cake. The gap between the stones is only 5 inches and is packed with soil.
