A Bulb Lasagne - Part 1: Removing the Summer Show
With Arthur's help, you'll learn how to clean the summer show and prepare your pots for spring.
Arthur usually removes his summer show in late October. Alternately, since it naturally decays, you can just leave it to do so. If you're taking that approach, slot in some allium plants so that you'll have something that comes up in spring.
Clearing the Summer Show Plants
Arthur removes most of the plants from the summer pots by just ripping them out and doesn't pay too much attention to the rootballs. Fibrous roots can be composted and provide important nutrients to the soil. Unlike the summer display, you don't have to worry about feeding the soil as the bulbs have all the energy within them.
Arthur decants out around a quarter of the compost and throws it in the waste bin. He will put the same volume of fresh compost back into the container as he does the layering.

Horticulturist, writer and container gardening expert.
Named one of the most influential young UK gardeners by Architectural Digest, Arthur Parkinson is a gardener, florist and author with a penchant for growing flamboyant blooms and raising chickens. After studying horticulture at the Royal Botanical Gardens of Kew, Arthur went to work for plantswoman Sarah Raven at her farm in East Sussex to pursue his passion for growing cut flowers. He later became head gardener for the potter Emma Bridgewater, which inspired his first book, The Pottery Gardener. Arthur also co-presents the popular gardening podcast 'Grow, cook, eat, arrange' with Sarah Raven and regularly appears on BBC's 'Gardeners' World'.
