After you have analyzed the space, you can plan how you will create sections and zones within the garden. Learn all you need to know about zoning from Dan in this lesson.

From the Lesson Workbook

Creating a General Arrangement and Zoning Plan

Components of the Old Rectory That Informed Each Zone

  • Ancient Yew trees that wrap around the far body
  • Gardens informed by the aspect of the house
  • The river that runs along one boundary
  • The house sits squarely in the centre

What to Consider When Zoning a Space

  • Where is the arrival point to a site and what will the first impression be?
  • Which areas do you want to be the most easily accessed from the house?
  • Are there any existing elements that will inform your design?
  • How will you transition through the different moods of each space?
  • Can you balance the formality of a bone structure with the informality of naturalistic planting?
  • Where do you want to catch the light at different times of the day?
  • How and when might a new space reveal itself from the previous one?
