Gain an understanding of how to design your outdoor space and the best way to start. Dan guides you through the order of the process to demystify the different facets of planning and design.

From the Lesson Workbook

Process of Design

There is a clear pathway that you can follow to achieve an informative and productive design process.

01 Evaluation of the plot

Recording your initial reaction to the space

02 Create a plan

Map the place you're going to be working towards

03 Identify zones

Work out the characters of each area you're creating

04 Research

Pinpoint the things that will work in your space

05 Moodboard

Collate both your first impressions and ideas about its future

06 Planting plans

Use the knowledge you've gathered for a well-informed design

Producing a concept document

I start my design process for a client by getting to know their garden and identifying the brief. I'll do a walk through of the site looking at the good and the bad, as well as discussing the clients aspirations. Then I'll produce a concept document.

  • This may go through many iterations
  • It should marry the criteria of the brief with the reality of the space
  • Includes an analysis of the site
  • Provides solutions and a sense of direction
  • Acts as a roadmap for the project going forwards

What goes into a concept document?

Images of the site and its existing materials

Floor plans of existing space

Information on aspect, site and soil

A light study of where the sun falls

Analysis of movement, flow and places to be

The proposed design

Planting plan and materials that will be used

A summary of the character and mood

Moodboard of colour and plants

Hand drawn sketches
