Gain an understanding of how to design your outdoor space and the best way to start. Dan guides you through the order of the process to demystify the different facets of planning and design.
There is a clear pathway that you can follow to achieve an informative and productive design process.
Recording your initial reaction to the space
Map the place you're going to be working towards
Work out the characters of each area you're creating
Pinpoint the things that will work in your space
Collate both your first impressions and ideas about its future
Use the knowledge you've gathered for a well-informed design
I start my design process for a client by getting to know their garden and identifying the brief. I'll do a walk through of the site looking at the good and the bad, as well as discussing the clients aspirations. Then I'll produce a concept document.
Images of the site and its existing materials
Floor plans of existing space
Information on aspect, site and soil
A light study of where the sun falls
Analysis of movement, flow and places to be
The proposed design
Planting plan and materials that will be used
A summary of the character and mood
Moodboard of colour and plants
Hand drawn sketches
Using all that you have learnt, set about creating your own concept document.
