A mood board is a helpful tool for establishing what you want out of a planting scheme. During this lesson, you will discover how to make an effective mood board and perform research to choose plants that will thrive and accomplish their intended purpose.

From the Lesson Workbook

Creating a Moodboard

Choosing the right plants is key not only to setting the tone and aesthetic of a space, but also to establishing what will work.

Ideas for Your Moodboard

  • A list of the plants you love that will work and thrive in the conditions. Try to think outside the box and consider different ways of creating a distinctive look.
  • Consider all types of planting, from trees to bulbs.
  • Take seasonality into account and establish which plants will flower when. Trace the origins of your favourite plants - this might help you find others that will work in harmony with them.
  • Your list will lead to a visual representation. It can be a simple board of plants, or you can get creative and include tear sheets from magazines that set the mood.
  • If you have different zones, create a mood board for each one to differentiate between atmospheres.

Your Assignment

You may have already created a moodboard for your garden. If so, take this moment to reevaluate your thinking. Has anything changed? Do you need to work up an area a bit more? Have you decided to remove something from your original design. Are there any elements you now feel need to be added in? Make a list below of any changes that need to be made.
