You will examine the different structural options for your garden as Dan talks you through choosing the flow of paths and walkways. Dan will also talk you through how to develop a palette of materials that work for your site.

From the Lesson Workbook

Materiality

Materiality

  • Try not to use any more than three materials in one space; once you go above this, you start to lose clarity.
  • Pull together physical samples of the materials that exist on your site, or ones you plan to use, and see how they work together.
  • I think the best materials are ones that patina and show their age over time.
  • The location will drive your material palette. Reclamation yards and builders' merchants are great places to source local materials.
  • Consider how the materials you choose will sit alongside the plants you are envisioning. It's important that they work in harmony.

Getting the Hard Landscaping Right

  • Once you have decided on the general arrangement of your site, the design for the hard landscaping should be carefully considered.
  • Keep it simple - this will be your bone structure and will provide a foundation for planting.
  • This may be an area where you need to call in professional help.

Your Assignment

Alongside a comprehensive design plan, it can be helpful to plot out a timeline that considers the principal steps you need to take in order to realise your design.
