In this lesson Sarah introduces you to a whopper pot she’s been trialling at Perch Hill and explains why limiting the colour palette gives the best impact.

From the Lesson Workbook

The Dutch Yard in July

By July, the Dutch yard is in full bloom. In this lesson, I am going to show you what the dark and rich palette looks like at the height of summer.

Recipe for Trial Dark & Rich Pot in the Dutch Yard

Bride: Pelargonium 'Tommy' (ivy leaf trailing)

Bridesmaid: Verbena 'Dark Magenta' (trailing)

Gatecrasher: Bidens 'Nice and Spicy'

Making the Most of a Small Space

The space I am working within the Dutch yard is no more than 3 metres x 4 metres, which highlights how many pots you can fit into a small area.

By cramming together pots filled with plants of different sizes, textures, heights and scents, you can make the most of a small space and create a high-impact garden.

Alongside my dark and rich pot, I have also planted:

  • Ipomoea
  • Dahlia 'Josie'
  • Heliotrope 'Riva'
  • Gazania 'Daybreak Orange'
  • Gazania 'Daybreak Bronze'

Limiting the Colour Palette Gives the Best Effect

To further maximise the impact of your space it's best to concentrate on just one palette with at most a small sprinkling of another.

In the Dutch yard, we concentrated on the dark and rich palette and added in just a few plants from the boiled sweet palette.
