I wouldn't consider myself a serious 'collector', but it brings me great joy to create informal collections of objects and art to decorate my home. I have picked up a few tips along the way that help to bring clarity and cohesion to my collections.

Choose a Meaningful Theme

My husband and I both love animals, so this became a natural theme to gravitate towards when we began purchasing objects and art together.

When you collect things with a meaning behind them, they automatically hold a special place in your heart and will give you pleasure every time you look at them.

Stay True to Yourself

Just because something is expensive or by a notable artist, doesn't mean you have to like it. Try not to fall into the trap of buying things because you think you should like them.

Visit Secondhand Shops and Antique Markets

You don't need to spend a lot of money to collect beautiful art and objects. There are so many treasures to be found at auctions, or even secondhand shops and flea markets; some of the best paintings I have ever bought are from antique shops.

Often people don't realise the true value of what they are selling, so you could find something truly special for a fraction of what it is worth - and that's the real thrill of collecting!

Seek Out Up-and-Coming Artists

If you're looking for an affordable way to buy original art, researching new artists that you love can be a great option.

You may also find that up-and-coming artists are happy to take on commissions too, meaning you can get a completely unique piece that is personal to you.
