with BUNNY WILLIAMS — World-renowned interior designer and industry leader
As a self-educated interior designer, rather than relying on formal training, Bunny has always been led by her instinct to create a home. She discusses what she considers to be important in beginning your journey into interior design.
I am a self-educated interior designer and instead of relying on formal training, I'm led by my instinct to create a home and to make living day-to-day more comfortable.
While I didn't attend a formal design school, I did take art classes. I believe that practising drawing and painting is an incredibly helpful way to understand scale and balance, as well as training your eye to look for visual relationships - all fundamental skills required for good interior design.
You don't have to be the best artist, but the act of drawing what you see will enable you to master an innate sense of proportion and wire your brain to be tuned into the scale of things, which translates into the building of balanced rooms.
I am inspired by the homes I spent time in as a child, and my memories of feeling welcomed and comforted.
To create a sense of home, you should be guided by what you truly love. Think about what appeals to your soul and brings you joy every day.
A good designer should always be learning; whether it's discovering a new furniture designer, or looking to the legendary interior decorators of the past, there is so much to be inspired by.
Try to expose yourself to new things as much as you can. Look at books, visit galleries and historical homes, browse antique shops and attend auctions - the more you see and get inspired by, the more interesting your work becomes.
