New York apartment - The small library

Off my main living room, there is a little snug where we watch television. I used decorating techniques to make the space feel more expansive than it is.

The small library

  • To counteract the limited footprint, I opted to stick to an extremely limited colour palette - mostly just one colour, green. The walls are upholstered in a mossy green patterned fabric, and the sofa is in a similar tone.
  • In a small room, be careful not to choose a sofa that is too deep as this can eat into valuable floor space. It's a delicate balance between comfort and practicality.
  • Rather than going for built-in cabinetry for books which could have made the room feel smaller, I decided to have freestanding bookcases instead.
  • Mounting a television onto bookcases helps it to 'disappear' within a room and not feel too intrusive - this is especially true if the bookcases are painted black.
  • Consider the flow between rooms, especially when those rooms are smaller. Having a visible journey through the home can help to make it feel bigger and more spacious.
