With so many moving parts during an interior design project, it’s important to have a solid plan in place and follow the right processes. Across the next few lessons, Bunny and Elizabeth break down the exact steps they follow from start to finish.
With so many moving parts during an interior design project, it's important to have a solid plan in place and follow the right processes. Across the next few lessons, I have broken down the exact steps I follow from start to finish.
Firstly you will create the scheme, as we discussed in the previous lesson.
Next, you need to consider your scheme in relation to the architecture and floor plans. While this may not necessarily be the remit of an interior designer, I find it crucial to be involved in these early stages so I can be across the visuals of the entire space.
It also benefits the project as a whole if every contractor works together as a team, so I will often have several meetings with the architect to really understand their plans and designs.
Once you have received the final floor plans and understood how the client will live in the space, it's time to factor in the furniture.
I recommend making several copies of the floor plan, and experimenting with different iterations of furniture layouts until you're absolutely happy. Work to scale, so that when it comes to shopping for the items, you know the sizes and shapes you're looking for.
Don't forget to keep referencing the elevations, as furniture needs to work in relation to windows and architectural features on the walls.
With the furniture layout set, you can begin to create a shopping list. Go through room by room and write down exactly what you need; we like to do this in an Excel document and include the required sizes to ensure the process is organised and clear.
At this stage, we will use the shopping list to create a budget.
Whether it's big or small, everyone always has a budget and wants to know exactly where their money is going.
We will ask a client what their budget is and then will show them what they can achieve from our shopping list with this budget. Sometimes, we will also show them what our recommended budget would be to achieve even better results.
I always ask my clients how long they intend to stay in a house, as this impacts where the budget is allocated. There is little point in spending lots of money on curtains or rugs for a home you are only staying in for a couple of years, as they likely won't fit your next property. In this instance, it's better to invest in quality furniture and upholstery that can move with you and become part of your collection for years to come.
