New York Apartment - The Bedroom

This is probably one of my favourite spaces in the whole apartment - not least because it features one of my best auction finds. It feels restful and restorative, just as I intended.

The Bedroom

  • The four-poster bed is the crowning jewel of this room and was found by my antique dealer husband at an auction. It is by French furniture designer, Serge Roche and originally belonged in a bedroom designed by the iconic Elsie de Wolfe for an art collector. I feel extremely lucky to have it, and was only able to buy it because the auction house was unaware of its true value - a true example of how it pays to research furniture design and history!
  • The bed became the starting point for the entire room's design scheme. I leaned into the silvery grey tones of the mirrored bedframe and partnered this with elements of white and a soft pink that gives some much-needed warmth. Limiting the colour palette to this curated trio of colours brings a calmness to the space.
  • Positioning a comfortable armchair near the window allows for the perfect spot to read or peruse a magazine.
  • Beside the bed, I have mismatched long tables, which I've taken with me through various apartments. If you buy things you love, you will always find a place for them, no matter where you move to.
  • I love bare floors, so instead of having a rug to add pattern to the floor, I painted it with a stencil.
  • In keeping with the grey colour scheme and soft feeling of the room, I have limited the artwork on the wall to most pencil drawings in delicate frames.
  • It was important to me that this bedroom felt calming and soothing, but in a guest bedroom, I sometimes like to go bolder and more adventurous.
  • I am very fussy about how a bed should be made. It should be easy to get in and out of, and shouldn't be hard to make up. My perfect formula is a fitted bottom sheet, a top sheet with a big foldover at the top, a down blanket and a quilted cover. By folding the top sheet over generously, these layers mostly stay in place throughout the night so it's easy to make in the morning. For pillows, I like to have two standard sizes, and two European squares in the front in case I want to sit up and read a book.
