Comfort is one of Bunny’s key design pillars, and it’s especially important in a room where relaxation is the primary function. In this lesson, she breaks down exactly how she ensures a living room is welcoming and fit for purpose.
Comfort is one of my key design pillars, and it's especially important in a room where relaxation is the primary function. I've broken down exactly how I ensure a living room is welcoming and fit for purpose.
A living room needs plenty of seating options that can be used in a variety of configurations to accommodate both small and larger gatherings.
A good-sized sofa is a must and can be paired with a selection of different mix-and-match chairs.
Benches and footstools are a great way to provide additional seating when needed, without taking up too much space.
Not everyone will be as obsessed with interior design as you, and rooms are made to be lived in after all. Try not to be too fussy or worried about things getting used and worn - it all adds to the character of the room!
A sofa with nothing on it can feel very stiff and uninviting, but when cushions are added, its hard lines are softened and it instantly feels more welcoming.
Look out for furniture with curved silhouettes to give the room a softer feel.
I think every room is made more comfortable with piles of books; they really invite you to sit down and read or simply flick through and relax.
My books are not only for me and my husband to enjoy but also for my houseguests too, who I will often find enjoying their morning coffee while reading in the sun-filled living room.
If you are keen to recreate the cosy feeling of a real fireplace without the hassle, gas fireplaces can be a much more convenient, low-maintenance option.
Synthetic sisal is a great option for flooring in a busy home, especially if you are in the countryside or have pets. It's extremely durable and can be washed and scrubbed.
