Tips for Working with Clients

When you're working on someone's home, there's a huge amount of emotion involved. As an interior designer, it's your role to tread the line between sensitivity and professionalism.

• Try not to take a client's frustrations personally - often they will be projecting their own anxieties onto you. It's your job to calmly reassure and offer solutions to any fixable issues.

• Working with clients means really getting to know their likes and dislikes, as well as their needs and requirements. A good interior designer is a good listener.

• A client may come to you with a huge amount of inspiration and reference material. They are looking to you to turn this into their dream home, so look for common themes and assess priorities.

• With social media, clients are exposed to a huge amount of design inspiration. Your role is to help edit and curate, as well as expand their horizons and offer new ideas.

• Face-to-face conversations are always best, and having regular meetings with your clients ensures all their requirements are being addressed.
