With the broad strokes of the planning in place, it’s time to consider the more specialised areas of lighting and artwork.
With the broad strokes of the planning in place, it's time to consider the more specialised areas of lighting and artwork.
Create a lighting plan. This details exactly where each piece of lighting is going and where. You will need to factor in general overhead lighting, accent lighting and task lighting.
This becomes an incredibly important document to share with other contractors to ensure the power outlets and wiring are done correctly and in the right places for what you need.
It also in turn becomes an additional shopping list that tells you exactly which fixtures you need to buy. Get creative and hunt out unique lighting, as this will really make a room scheme sing.
Begin to consider artwork and the collections of decorative objects that will be on display. If you or your client don't have a collection of art, I would recommend beginning to research artists at this stage, as a statement piece of art can inform the colour scheme of a room.
It can be helpful to work with art consultants or galleries if you are looking for a steer in the right direction.
Alternatively, family mementoes can be turned into 'artwork'; printing a selection of favourite family photographs in black and white, then framing them and hanging them in a pleasing grouping is really effective. Similarly, children's drawings can look really lovely when framed beautifully.
A vintage decorative screen or panel is also a great way to make a big impact in a room with just one piece.
