It’s not always easy to get something right the first time, and this was the case with Bunny’s living room. She discusses where and how she went wrong, and what she did to fix it.
It took me a while to get around to designing the living room and I began with a completely blank canvas.
In the very first iteration of this room, I covered all the walls in a densely patterned wallpaper in an attempt to make it feel cosy - however, I quickly got bored of it. The current colour choice of a sunny yellow was inspired by a trip to Italy. It gives the room a warm glow, making it feel enticing and bright all year round. I didn't want the walls to feel like a solid colour, so I watered down the paint to achieve the mottled effect.
I opted for sofas to be in a plain colour, so I can add different textures and patterns through cushions and blankets.
The mantle is an original feature, and likely dates back to around 1840.
An original cornice surrounds each door and window; I decided against installing curtains to allow these details to sing. Corners of a room can sometimes be a bit of dead space - to combat this, I used a 1950s mirror screen to bounce the light around and add visual interest.
Use furniture to balance architectural features - in this room, I balanced the door on one side of the fireplace by placing a tall cupboard and desk unit on the other side. The artwork I have hung in this room is an eclectic mix of contemporary pieces with more traditional line drawings and paintings.
French doors lead onto a screen porch, a very pleasant place to enjoy the sunshine without having to worry about mosquitoes. A mix of seating allows flexibility and can accommodate up to eight people comfortably.
