Willow walks you through an early autumn arrangement

From the Lesson Workbook

An Early Autumn Arrangement

The container used in this arrangement was from eBay. I prefer a wide range of shapes when creating autumn arrangements, and often use wild English hydrangeas grown in bushes that come and go as they please.

Plunge hydrangeas into a bowl of water and leave for up to twelve hours to spruce them up, this works for any flowers. In England, pick hydrangeas just before the frost, around mid-October, and place them in a vase with a little water.

Proportion wise, aim for one and a half times the height of the container. Aim for strong colours and use white to lift the arrangement. When picking dahlias give them a drink, remove all their leaves then give them another drink. At each stage keep pulling the flowers out and pepping them up.

For This Autumn Arrangement I Used:

  • Persicaria
  • Cosmos
  • Rose Hips
  • Dahlias
  • Japanese anemones
  • Hydrangeas
