Alidad breaks down what it is that makes a home feel timeless, and explains how to incorporate timelessness into your own designs.
It's easier to do pretty rooms, but that isn't enough for a room to be timeless. A room that works is one in which the decorator has carefully thought about the function of the room. Function needs to be put in place.
The furniture layout gives you everything you are going to need. Function refers to the traffic working well around the room. You can move around with ease. Everything is in the right place. These and the invisible things in the room require much consideration.
A furniture layout is key in making your home truly timeless. Interior design is a lot more than placing bits of furniture. It is actually very logical. The function for me the ability to move around the room with ease and be comfortable.
Once you have a room that functions, it is the beginning of getting a timeless home. A timeless home is one that you don't have to change. Everything is in the right place and everything has been thought out, functioning well. Every scenario has been thought through. This is one of the things that makes a home timeless.
Mastering the storage in a home is key to making it timeless. Unless you think about the right storage, a home doesn't truly make sense. There are many aspects of a house that make it timeless. The right amount of storage in the right places is key in making a space timeless.
Think about the maternal side of your family. Think about your mother and grandmother. I love creating a home that appears to have evolved over generations. I want a home to look as if different people from the same family have contributed to the home.
Nothing is symmetrical, they occupy the same amount of volume. They could be related, but from different periods.
Something designed is not what I like; those interiors are fun for a few years but never last.
If something looks nice, it is good enough. Pairing something that is not great with something less great. Everything about the same provenance and period is so boring. You need to ask yourself if you are creating a museum or a home?
When you've not inherited much and are starting from scratch, you have to find yourself. Ask yourself what do you want? What do you like? Don't get too bogged down with whether things go together. What is important is just starting.
Ask yourself the following questions:
Look through magazines and/or Pinterest for inspiration and interrogate what it is you like about each image. Is there an object you like particularly? Is it the colour palette? Is it the sense of scale in the space? Once you've established what it is you truly like, you will begin to understand your tastes better.
