Atmosphere isn't just something you just see, it is something you feel. With Alidad guiding you, discover how to create the perfect atmosphere in your rooms.
Atmosphere for me is when your five senses are being stimulated. Atmosphere is belonging or some sort of experience.
For me, comfort is one of the most important things in a room. Comfort is something that is well understood in the United Kingdom. You need to make sure that your room is not just grand but is also comfortable.
As society changed, particularly what was expected for women to wear, so did furnishings. You can mix Georgian and other less comfortable chairs into a scheme but make sure you do have comfortable ones.
The danger with opulence is that very quickly a room can be turned into a museum rather than a room that is lived in. My principles– comfort, cosiness, a layered look, timeless look they all apply. If an opulent room is comfortable it will never be timeless.
If you have a large house you can create different atmospheres in different rooms. Creating different atmospheres in different rooms is a great thing to do as you can work out where the sun is. Based on the sun's orientation, I can create drawing rooms that are light and cheery.
Normally my dining rooms and libraries are north facing. Don't be afraid of creating a unique atmosphere in different rooms.
Listening to the home is key. Each house has a story to tell you. The house is facing north, east, west or south. You need to ask yourself what the house is telling you.
You need to look at the home you have bought differently. Think about how each room is facing. Plan to do things with your rooms that make sense. Make north-facing rooms cosy and more atmospheric. Make south, east and west rooms lighter rooms.
