From the Lesson Workbook

Getting to Know Your Clients

Listening and paying attention to the meaning behind what the client is saying is important. Remember that you are creating a home for someone else and not yourself. You need to really get to know your client. Everyone comes with baggage and past experience.

It is up to a good designer to slowly and gently show clients that they are moving to a new house and a new space, occupying a completely new and different space. You need to do something for them. Everything really needs to come together.

Interiors bring out the most insecure aspects of people. Until you get the clients confidence it will never go forward. Things start to fall into place as you get to know the clients. The further you go, the more successful the project gets.

Dealing with Difficult Clients

No two clients are ever the same and you need to respect that. Be vary careful about extracting information. Tell the client to tell you specifically what they like about an image. Make sure everything gets hooked back together. Clients start opening up eventually. Try and do something real for yourself.

When working with clients it's important to start with little things and see the individual items that they like rather than the overall scheme. Don't expect a lot of response from clients.

This is a job that requires a lot of patience and care. Make them feel confident by being confident yourself. Take the time to understand your client and know what they really want. You should not let them feel your fears and insecurities. When confidence fades, things begin to go wrong. Think ten, fifteen, and twenty years down the road.

Stay One Step Ahead

You should always be one step ahead of your client. Even if you are scared, it shouldn't come across. This is a job in which a lot of confidence is required.

What Makes the Job So Special?

The last day when everything is finished and the client is smiling makes up for everything. That is what Alidad looks for in a project.
