A lover of antiques, Alidad invites you to bring antique textiles into your home. In this lesson you will learn how to incorporate ancient textiles into your home by using large tapestries and vintage linens.
I was exposed to antique textiles really early. Instinctively I leave gaps in schemes for antique textiles, cushions and tapestry. Antique textiles really bring extra texture to a space.
I use antique textiles as much as I can. It really helps to layer and bring texture to a space, defining the colours I am using in the modern upholstery. Don't worry about it – if you like it and fall in love with it just buy it. Provided your room has some of the colours of the antique textiles then you should be ok.
Just using a few antique textiles really helps achieve the look of evolving over many generations.
Antique textiles give you a lot of direction. They have a colour balance already within them. Antique textiles make the room more authentic looking and is effortless. Antique textiles are a bit of a mystery, just use them! Large tapestry brings lovely textures and colours into a room. Using antique textiles, particularly on the walls, gives a grand scale.
My colours come from antique textiles, largely colours come from the nineteenth and seventeen centuries. These sorts of colours will never go out of fashion and will always be there.
I don't really worry about the condition of the textiles. If they aren't in great condition they can be used as cushions and tablecloths. This gives a final layer of history. Give things a little bit of time before deciding if they clash or not.
Antiques are objects that are older than 100 years, whilst vintage is anything older than 20 years. As long as the patterns and textures go it doesn't really matter. Don't be worried about it being the right or wrong period for the room.
If you have a healthy budget, auction houses are a great place for finding antique pieces. For those with a smaller budget, car boot sales are great.
