The Family Room

Where the family is going to gather is a really important aspect of your home. You need to make sure you really think about how your family area is going to function.

If you are lucky enough to have a family room you need to make sure you have everything in it that you need. You need comfortable chairs, an area where you can watch television quite easily.

If you have a large enough room it would be nice to have an area in it where you can eat. You could have a sitting, eating and writing section. The family area for me is more important than the grand reception areas.

Planning Your Room for Multi-Use

If you have a large family room that is great. Making that space multi-use is a great luxury. Make sure that when you are initially planning that there is ample room for all the different areas you need to use.

I usually leave a minimum of 60cm between the coffee table and sofa in to allow people to move around the room.

Storage

A family room needs ample storage. Make sure there is plenty of storage so that you can be slightly independent of your dining room and kitchen. Once you have all you need in the room it is a lot easier to spend as much time there as possible.

Your Assignment

Grab a pen and some paper and start listing what you need and want out of your family room. How many people would the room be for? What are the various needs of your family members?
