Alidad continues his tour of Buscot Park, exploring the Dutch Room and explaining how the project unfolded.
The Dutch room is made of two rooms that were knocked into one in the 1930s. Farringdon wanted a backdrop to enhance his pictures. We went for a bottle green damask on the walls. The ceiling was initially pink and baby blue but we opted for a plainer colour that enhanced the rest of the room, a scheme of shades of off-white.
The main pieces of furniture were inherited, making it an eclectic space. The aim was for the space to be comfy, so two comfortable chairs were added to the scheme.
The fabric was made specially. It is grand but not grand and goes well with gilded frames. In grand rooms, you need to make sure that the repeat of the fabric is quite large. Even in a smaller room, I would have used a large pattern.
I love old carpets. I couldn't find the right carpet for this room. So in the end I made it. It worked out very well as large and Ziegler designed. I mixed all the various shades. Ziegler made rugs for the European market where the colours were often very limited.
I hate spotlights, I felt that the pictures were so important they needed to be seen. I used pin lights as they frame paintings well. As the ceiling wasn't original wasn't listed, so I was able to access the ceiling.
A great website to discover stately homes near you if you live in the UK is Historic Houses.
