Antiques at Battle Brown

Join me in Hudson, New York - a well known haunt for interior designers thanks to its plethora of antique shops and galleries. Today we are visiting Battle Brown, which stocks a mixture of American and British folk pieces.

Tips for Sourcing Antiques

  • Always be looking, whether you make it a weekly activity or regularly attend annual fairs, commit the time to making it a habit.
  • Rather than hunting out something specific, try to keep an open mind. There is little point in giving yourself a strict shopping list because you are unlikely to find exactly what you're looking for.
  • My process is to find something I love, and then think about where to put it rather than the other way around.
  • Ceramics and glassware are easy wins when antique shopping - they're easily transportable if you're shopping abroad, and they can also be used in an interior in so many different ways.
  • As a designer, I do tend to buy lovely mirrors, lamps, chairs and small tables without a specific project in mind and keep them in stock.
  • Colour is a great unifier when it comes to shopping antiques - the style and design of pieces will vary, but if there is a common colour running through the collection it will feel cohesive.
