Next up, Rita is tackling the kitchen decorating scheme. She uses existing curtains she already has as the starting point.

Scheming the kitchen

The new kitchen is being created where my current bedroom is. I really wanted to keep the existing curtains - not only do I still love them, but they were also a considerable expense - so these became the starting point for the new kitchen scheme.

Tips for building a scheme

  • Consider when a room is used, and how you want to feel when using it. A rich and dramatic fabric or wallpaper might be more suited to somewhere you want to feel cosy in the evening, whereas a fresher design might be more suitable for a room you spend mornings in.
  • Think about how the scale of the pattern you are looking at might work in relation to the size of the place you want to put it.
  • It's not necessarily better to have everything brand new. In fact, there is a certain discipline to using something you already have, and it can be a great springboard for other ideas.
