An inevitable part of any renovation project is understanding what could have been done differently. Rita reflects on some of the lessons learnt from Oxford Gardens, and explains how those lessons can help you.
We are always learning, no matter how experienced we are, and I have learnt some key lessons from this project at Oxford Gardens.
One of these is that changing your mind is sometimes just a part of the process. Often, your project manager and your builder will make you feel as if there is no room for changes. But changing your mind is inevitable as a project evolves. This isn't to say that you should be indecisive - indecision is expensive. But at points, reassessing what is in front of you is essential.
Secondly, every drawing and schedule needs to be checked and rechecked before it is implemented. I have found in this project that if a drawing is unclear, often tradespeople will simply make up how they think certain elements should be done. This can result in mistakes that are then very expensive to rectify.
So check and recheck for anything which is unclear, and be clear on your plans that if something is not obvious they are to come back to you or the architect for clarification.
