Next is Rita’s new master bedroom, which took shape after the building work connected the newly acquired upstairs flat to her existing floor plan.

The Airy Master Bedroom

You're now joining me in my new bedroom, which was created by purchasing the flat upstairs and connecting it to my existing apartment.

  • I was particularly keen to think about how the layout of this new space could evolve as my daughter gets older and the needs of our family change - and I think I've been successful in future-proofing the rooms without needing to do any major structural changes down the line.
  • At the windows I have installed sheer curtains as the outlook isn't particularly attractive and they also provide privacy.
  • I really wanted all the architectural details to be properly designed and am really pleased with how my architect Ross Duguid detailed all the architraves, doors, skirting boards and the joinery.
  • It's nice to have a chest of drawers beside a bed; I find nightstands to be too small and prefer either a sizable unit for maximum storage or a table with a larger top.
  • Don't worry about either side of the bed being symmetrical - I like it when the bedside lamps and furniture are mismatching.
  • Never be afraid to make changes along the way - it's always better to make the change and have what you want, than to live with something that isn't quite right.
  • Factor in substantial review periods for any drawings or plans - often contractors only allow a day, but push for longer so you can properly examine them. It's so important to check every detail so you can catch any misguided assumptions or mistakes.
